Compatible with the Coast Guard’s standard web belt with brass tip, this buckle is mounted with the Coast Guard emblem featuring the two crossed anchors and Coast Guard shield rendered in silver and the disc containing the shield and inscription “UNITED STATES COAST GUARD 1790” in gold. It is the same design referred to as the "Coast Guard medallion" in the USCG worn by junior Enlisted Guardsmen (E-1 to E-3) on the Garrison Cap and by both junior Enlisted and Petty Officers (E-4 to E-6) on the Combination Cap.
Current Coast Guard uniform regulations do not authorize ornamental or adorned belt buckles for wear with uniforms worn by Active Duty or Reserve personnel, but this was not always the case. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, brass buckles featuring the rank/rate insignia of Officers and Enlisted members or certification insignia (Cutterman, Coxswain, etc.) were part of the everyday uniform wear; silver buckles with cutter profiles were also worn. However, all personnel were required to own an unadorned brass buckle for wear during uniform inspections or when prescribed by a Commander.
