Designed to accommodate the Coast Guard standard web belt, this ornamental brass buckle features an eye-catching rendering of the Coast Guard’s Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO) insignia. Two stars reflect the rate’s number of grades above Chief Petty Officer (E-7); the fouled anchor was used in various types of insignias in both the Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Life Saving Service, which were merged to form the Coast Guard; and the shield was added to the ensigns of Revenue Cutters in 1799.
Current Coast Guard Uniform Regulations are silent on buckles adorned with ornamentation except for Ceremonial Honor Guard members, but previous editions published as recently as 2003 prescribe the standard buckle as “unadorned brass or brass colored medal.” Brass buckles adorned with rate and certification insignias were authorized for wear with certain uniforms until uniform regulation changes were issued in the mid-1980s.
