This embroidered Petty Officer 3rd Class rank insignia is worn on both collars of the Coast Guard’s Operational Dress Uniform, or ODU, and features a single gold chevron beneath a silver Coast Guard shield.
To properly place the insignia, envision a line that equally bisects collar point, then place the insignia chevron-point down so the line runs through the middle of the insignia. Petty Officer 3rd Class collar insignia should be placed 1 1/8th inch from the collar point.
All personnel are required to own the Operational Dress Uniform, which was introduced in 2000 to take the place of Working Blue and Undress Blue uniforms. The ODU was adopted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps in 2008, and in 2015 the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned also adopted it to replace the Battle Dress Uniform.
