Coast Guard Petty Officers 2nd Class (E-5) wear their insignia of rank on both collars of the Operational Dress Uniform. Uniform regulations mandate that only embroidered, sew-on insignia may be worn, a rule likely created to address possible safety issues that might arise from the wear of metallic insignia devices (note that Coast Guard Academy Cadets and students at Officer Candidate School are permitted to wear metal collar insignia.).
Embroidered Petty Officer 2nd Class rank insignia is worn with the chevrons’ tips facing in the direction of the collar point. Center the insignia on an imaginary line that equally bisects the collar point (this should also equally bisect he chevrons) with the insignia placed 1 1/8th-inch from the collar point.
