Designed for wear on both collars of the Operational Dress Uniform (ODU), this Petty Officer 1st Class (E-6) insignia of rank features three gold chevrons surmounted by a silver Coast Guard shield embroidered onto a swatch of a fabric that matches the color of the ODU.
Coast Guard uniform regulations prohibit the wear of metal grade insignia on the ODU, a stricture likely put in place to avoid safety hazards that could arise should a metal device come loose under certain working conditions. (This prohibition is waived for Coast Guard Academy Cadets and Guardsmen attending Officer Candidate School.)
The embroidered Petty Officer 1st Class insignia of rank should be placed on the collar 1 and 1/8th of an inch from the collar point. To properly orient the insignia, imagine a line equally bisecting the collar point, then center the insignia on the line with the chevrons’ tips facing the collar point; the imaginary line should now equally bisect the chevrons and thus the entire insignia.
