Silver thread is used for the star and Coast Guard shield and gold is used to craft the fouled anchor, the three components of the embroidered Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8) collar rank insignia worn on the Operational Dress Uniform (ODU). Embroidered collar insignia was worn on the Working Blue uniform, one of the two uniforms replaced when the ODU was introduced in 2000.
The Senior Chief Petty Officer rank insignia is worn tilted at roughly 45-degree angle from the vertical with the fouled anchor’s arms down and the shank pointing up. To properly orient the device, center the insignia on an imaginary line that equally bisects the collar point; the crown of the anchor will be pointed directly at the collar point and the shank will rest on the line. Insignia are placed one and one-eighth of an inch from the collar point.
