Master Chief Petty Officers (E-9) wear sew-on rank in-signia on the collars of the Coast Guard’s Operational Dress Uniform. Embroidered on fabric that matches that of the ODU, the insignia used gold thread for the fouled anchor associated with all three Chief Petty Officer (CPO) ranks and silver thread for the Coast Guard shield and two stars (signifying the MCPO status of two grades above CPO).
Embroidered MCPO rank insignia are oriented on the ODU collars with the anchor shank pointed toward the collar (neck) and its crown (middle of the anchor’s two arms) toward the collar point. Center the insignia by imagining a line bisecting the collar point, then place the insignia on the line so it also equally bisects the device (the shank should rest entirely on that line). The insignia should be positioned so its outermost edge is 1-1/8th of an inch from the collar point.
