The Coast Guard prescribes embroidered sew-on insignia on the Operational Dress Uniform. For Chief Warrant Officer bars, the insignia is oriented with the long axis centered along an imaginary line equally bisecting the collar point, positioned so that the bottom of the CWO insignia is 1-1/8th of an inch from the collar point.
Like the Navy, the Coast Guard does not use the rank of Warrant Officer, or pay grade W-1, making Chief Warrant Officer 2 the lowest CWO rank. But recently (December 1918) the Navy revived the W-1 grade with the appointment of six Cryptologic Technicians to the rank of Warrant Officers in an attempt to bolsters its cyberwarfare capabilities by securing highly skilled technicians early in their careers—an essential move when private industry is offering increasingly enticing compensation packages.
As a service component of the Department of Defense’s U.S. Cyber Command, the Coast Guard already has some technicians in the cyber field, and it too might have to bring back the Warrant Officer 1 grade to provide for the long-term development of its cyber capabilities.
