Because it is the everyday working uniform, Coast Guard regulations mandate only embroidered sew-on insignia as collar devices on the Operational Dress Uniform (ODU) to prevent any hazards that could arise if metal insignia were to come loose and fall into machinery or electronics.
To properly place the Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CWO4) insignia on the ODU collar, imaginary a line equilaterally bisecting the collar and running to the top collar edge. Orient the CWO4 insignia for the long axis is on the vertical, then place it and center it on that line, dividing the insignia into two vertical halves. Finally, move the insignia down until the base of the insignia is 1-1/8 inches from the point.
Although the Coast Guard was authorized to establish a rate of CWO5 in 1994, it has never been used.
