In the Coast Guard, metal insignia is the standard style of collar device, with the Operational Dress Uniform and its embroidered rank insignia being the only exception to the rule. Petty Officers Third Class wear metal collar grade insignia on the long- and short-sleeve Light Blue Shirts (Service Dress Bravo “B” and Tropical Blue uniforms) and the long-sleeve Dark Blue Dress Shirt (Winter Dress Blue uniform).
To attach the Petty Officer Third Class collar device in the proper location, orient it so that the chevron is pointing down and then place it so that its center is one inch from the collar’s leading edge. Center the device between the visible bottom and top edges of the collar. Lastly, orient it so that an imaginary line equally bisecting the angle of the chevron—i.e., perfectly “splitting” the device in half—is parallel with the collar’s leading edge.
