Petty Officers Second Class (E-5) wear metal collar grade insignia on the shirts of the Service Dress Bravo “B,” Tropical Blue, and Winter Dress Blue uniforms. The shiny gold and silver version is normally worn, but senior Coast Guard Officers may prescribe subdued (black) metal insignia in circumstances might make the wear of the standard device hazardous, typically during wartime or other emergencies.
Junior enlisted collar insignia are worn with the chevrons pointing toward the bottom of the collar. Centering the device between the top and bottom edges of the collar, place it so that its center is one inch from the leading edge of the collar, the orient it so that an imaginary line perfectly bisecting the chevrons is parallel to the leading edge.
