Like their junior enlisted counterparts (E-4 to E-6), Chief Petty Officers wear shiny metal grade insignia on the shirt collars of the Service Dress Bravo “B,” Tropical Blue, and Winter Dress Blue uniforms, but additionally they wear them on the collars of the Windbreaker and the Trench Coat.
The insignia is also issued in black metal, which Senior Officers may prescribe for wear during wartime or emergency conditions in which wearing the normal insignia could might cause unwanted detection.
The CPO metal grade collar insignia is worn in the same manner on both shirts and coats. With the chevrons pointing down and the insignia centered between the top and bottom edge of the collar, the device is placed so that its center is one inch from and parallel to the leading edge of the collar.
