Shiny metal rank insignia are the standard devices worn on Coast Guard uniforms that require collar insignia. They are worn on the Light Blue Shirt worn with the Service Dress Bravo “B” and Tropical Blue uniforms, as well as on the Dark Blue Dress Shirt of the Winter Dress Blue uniform. Master Chief Petty Officers also wear the metal collar grade insignia on the collars of the Windbreaker and the Trench Coat. In cases of wartime or other emergency conditions, however, Senior Commanders have the authority to prescribe black metal versions if they believe that wear of the standard shiny insignia might be hazardous.
The same rules for attaching the Master CPO insignia are used for both shirts and coats. With the device oriented so the chevrons are pointing and the Coast Guard shield is closest to the neck, place the insignia so that its center is an inch from the collar’s leading edge. Center the insignia between the top and bottom collar edges, then align it on an imaginary line that is parallel to the leading collar edge and which perfectly bisects the chevrons, “splitting” the insignia in two equal haves.
