Coast Guard uniform regulations (2.A.1., Military Image, COMDSINST M1020.6J) authorize the wear of cuff links of either a plain gold design or featuring Guard-related imagery on uniform shirts manufactured to accommodate them. Designed for Commissioned and Chief Warrant Officers, these gold cuff links feature the Coast Guard Officer insignia—a silver Coast Guard shield superimposed on a gold eagle with spread wings clutching a horizontal fouled anchor—and are a tasteful component in creating a professional military appearance.
Uniforms which feature cuff link-ready shirts include the Formal Dress Blue, Dinner Dress Blue Jacket (DDBJ), and Dinner Dress White Jacket (DDWJ). Optional for all Coast Guard personnel, Formal Dress Blue uniforms are mandatory for Officers in the rank of Captain (O-6) or higher, or for other Officer whose duty assignment protocol makes its wear necessary. DDBJ and DDWJ uniforms are mandatory for Lieutenants (O-4) and above on active duty and are also optional for all other Coast Guard members.
