By the time that Coast Guard personnel in the Electronics Technician (ET rating) have reached the minimum pay grade E-6 to be considered eligible for promotion to an Electronics (ELC) Chief Warrant Officer, they will have acquired an extremely broad education in electronics and in a variety of technology platforms that are the focus of other Warrant Officer specialties such as information systems, computers, and communications.
The ET Class “A” School covers rudiments such as alternating and direct current, radio frequencies, digital electronics, servos and synchros, and microprocessors. Troubleshooting of electronics systems, industrial and workplace safety, and materials control training comes with the advancement to E-5, followed by courses in communications systems development, solid-state electronics, and troubleshooting of various systems.
Among the assignments ELC Warrant Officers receive are heads of electronics repair facilities, assistants to electronics officers, electronics and electronics repair instructors, and as officers tasked with not only with the inspection and use of electronics systems, but also with evaluating their reliability, capabilities, and limitations. All aspects of maintenance and repair of electronics equipment fall under their purview, and they plan and direct the maintenance and repair of electronic equipment by Guardsmen in the ET rating.
The collar device worn by ELC Chief Warrant Officers features a helium atom with two stars superimposed over the horizontal and vertical orbits.
