The Coast Guard established the Electronics Warrant Officer specialty in 1968, but the image of a helium atom with the orbiting electrons circling two protons and two neutrons had been used by the Coast Guard for its Radio Technician rating starting in 1942. The Electronics Technician rating, formed in 1948, continued to use the specialty mark and it was the obvious choice when the decision to create the Electronic specialty was made in the last 1960s.

Type
- Hard shoulder boards are worn on the male and female versions of the Dinner Dress White Jacket, Service Dress White Coat, Bridge Coat with shoulder loops, and legacy Reefer Coat.
- Enhanced boards are worn on the Light Blue shirt (Service Dress Blue “Bravo” Tropical Blue uniforms, Bridge Coats with epaulettes, Cardigan and Wooly-Pully Sweaters (except with Winter Dress Blue uniform)
Size
- Large is regular issue size, Small is 3/4 size.
- Male and female officers may wear either size in order to achieve best appearance.
Rank
- Choose either CWO2, CWO3, or CWO4.
- The rank of CWO5 is Congressionally authorized but has not yet been established by the Coast Guard.
