For both its Commissioned and Chief Warrant Officers, the Coast Guard prescribes the wear of two styles of Shoulder Board, Hard and Enhanced, to display insignia of rank on a variety of uniforms. Both styles are issued in Large and Small (three-quarter scale) sizes that may be worn by both male and female personnel to achieve the best appearance.
Hard shoulder boards are designed for wear on uniform coats and jackets that come with shoulder loops to accommodate the hasp-style attachment located on the bottom of the board. These include the Dinner Dress White Jacket (DDWJ), worn exclusively with the highly formal DDWJ uniform; the Service Dress White Coat, worn with Full, Dinner, and Service Dress uniforms; and Bridge and Reefer Coats (the latter is no longer issued but may be worn as long as serviceable).
Also available in Large and Small sizes, Enhanced Shoulder boards are worn on less-formal uniforms and are attached by sliding them over shoulder epaulets, sometimes known as shoulder straps. Enhanced boards are prescribed for wear with Light Blue shirts worn with the Service Dress Blue “Bravo” and Tropical Blue uniforms, as well as with the Cardigan and Wooly-Pully Sweaters (except with the optional Winter Dress Blue uniform). Enhanced boards are also authorized for wear on Bridge Coats that come with epaulets.
