The single half-inch gold stripe indicating the rank of Coast Guard Ensign appears on the sleeves of dress uniforms and on Hard and Enhanced shoulder boards, with a Coast Guard shield embroidered in gold sewn 1/4-inch above the top of the stripe.
Designed with a hasp on the bottom, Hard shoulder boards are attached by inserting the hasp through shoulder loops of the Service Dress White Jacket (worn with the Dinner Dress White, Full Dress White, and Service Dress White uniforms) and the Dinner Dress White Jacket and snapping the securing button in place. Additionally, hard boards are worn on Reefer Coats and on Bridge Coats that have shoulder loops.
Enhanced shoulder boards are made with a semi-tubular design featuring open-ended elastic material through which epaulets are inserted. Ensigns wear enhanced shoulder boards with the Tropical Blue uniform’s short-sleeve Light Blue shirt and the Service Dress Blue “Bravo” uniform’s Light Blue shirt (both long- and short-sleeve). Enhanced Ensign boards are also authorized for the wear on Bridge Coats with epaulets, and with the Cardigan and Wooly-Pully Sweaters (except on the Winter Dress Blue uniform).
