Designed for wear on uniforms featuring shoulder loops and epaulettes respectively, Hard and Enhanced shoulder boards for male and female Chief Warrant Officers display rank (W-2 to W-4), CWO specialty mark, and the gold Coast Guard emblem.
Use the selectors for Type, Rank, and Size to specify a board that fits your uniform’s specifications and body size (i.e., board sizes are not gender-based). Briefly, Hard boards are most commonly worn on the Dinner Dress White Jacket and Service Dress White Coat, but are also prescribed for Bridge Coats (with shoulder loops) and Reefer Coats. Enhanced shoulder boards are worn on epaulettes of Light Blue shirts and women’s overblouses, sweaters (Cardigan and Wooly-Pully), and Bridge Coats with epaulettes. See Section 4.A.1, COMDTINST M1020.6J for full guidance on the wear of shoulder boards.

The Warrant Officer specialty of Port Safety and Security and its source rating, Port Safety Specialist, were discontinued as the Coast Guard sought to place greater emphasis its law-enforcement mandates with the establishment of the Maritime Enforcement rating in June 2008 and the CWO specialty of Maritime Law Enforcement Specialist in August of the same year. Port Safety & Security CWOs were laterally transferred to MLES billets and new CWO appointments were drawn from the CPO ranks in the Maritime Enforcement rating.
