United States Coast Guard Lieutenant Commanders wear Hard shoulder boards on two types of Dress coats and jackets: the Dinner Dress White Jacket (DDWJ), worn with the uniform of the same name, and the Service Dress White Coast, a single-breasted formfitting coat with a stand-up collar worn with the Dinner Dress, Full Dress, and Service Dress White uniforms. Hard shoulder boards are also prescribed for wear by Lieutenant Commanders on the Reefer and Bridge Coats (with shoulder loops).
Enhanced shoulder boards are designed for displaying the Lieutenant Commander insignia of rank on less formal uniforms and are manufactured with an open-ended half-tube of elastic material attached to the bottom through which epaulets are inserted. These include the short- and long-sleeved Light Blue shirt worn with the Service Dress Blue “Bravo” uniform, the short-sleeve Light Blue shirt or women’s overblouse worn with Tropical Blue uniform, and the Cardigan or Wooly-Pully Sweaters (except on Winter Dress Blue uniforms). Enhanced shoulder boards are also worn by Lieutenant Commanders on Bridge Coats manufactured with epaulets rather than shoulder loops.
To ensure the best fit on the wearer's shoulders, both male and female Lieutenant Commanders may choose between Regular and 3/4-size versions of either shoulder board style. If one of these sizes is not displayed in the Size selection box it means we are currently out of stock.
