Open to Coast Guard enlisted personnel in the Gunner’s Mate rating at the E-6 or higher pay grade, the Warrant Officer Weapons (WEPS) specialty revolves around ordnance, gunnery, and guns, ranging in size from sidearms to the MK 75 Gun Mount System with its 76mm cannon system (manufactured either by OTO Melara or BAE Systems).
As overseers of the armory, they supervise the storage, security, requisitioning, and tracking and accounting procedures for all ordnance equipment and parts associated with their repair, which is also their responsibility. Ensuring that ammunition is stored properly and its usage carefully tracked falls under their purview, as does the direction and supervision of the assembly, maintenance, installation, and testing of ordnance equipment.
Naturally, Coast Guard Weapons specialists will earn the Small Arms Instructor qualification so they can develop and run training programs for weapons such as the MK-19 40mm Grenade Machine Gun, the crew-served M240 and Browning M2 machine guns.
