Worn exclusively with the Service Khaki uniform, our Officer’s version of the Khaki Combination Cover arrives with all insignia components mounted, including the Navy Officer cap device, a synthetic gold chin strap (crafted from the same material used for sleeve lacings), and gold cap screws embossed with the Navy Eagle that secure both the chin strap and mounting band.
But it’s the single row of acorns and oak leaves embroidered on the visor in lustrous gold bullion that is the star of the show, which is as it should be—it signifies that the wearer is a Senior Officer in the rank of Commander (pay grade O-5) or Captain (O-6).
Both male and female Commanders and Captains have been authorized to wear either this classic cap or the newly designed Alternate Combination Cover since 2015, but at the same time the old Female Combination Cover was still authorized for wear, giving them the “honor” of having three types of Combination Caps that could be worn in compliance with regulations. The wear out date for the Female Combination Cover and the end of this trifecta of toppers is October 31, 2018.
