The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn by Connecticut Army National Guard (ARNG) personnel serving in the Connecticut National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters (HW) was first approved for HQ and HQ Detachment, Connecticut National Guard on 30 November 1949. It was redesignated with an amended description for HQ, State Area Command, Connecticut Army National Guard on 30 December 1983. On 1 October 2003, it was given its current designation after being amended to update the description and add a symbolism.
As early as 1759, the grapevine began to be used as a device or image for Connecticut. Today, it is found on both the Connecticut State Flag and the State Seal. The twisted wreath below the grapevine is red and white, reflecting the English origin of the predominant population of the state at the time the insignia was approved.
The Joint Force Headquarters, Connecticut National Guard is headquartered at Hartford, Connecticut.
