Like its Service Dress Blue (SDB) counterpart, the Male Officer Service Dress White uniform (SDW) is prescribed for wear for all functions where Formal, Dinner, or Full Dress uniforms are not prescribed. However, it cannot be worn year-round like the SDB, and instead may only be prescribed for Summer Wear. It also has a decidedly different design, with a single-breasted coat featuring a standing collar (also called a Mandarin collar) and shoulder boards worn in lieu of sleeve stripes and devices to denote rank and branch of service.
The male and female versions of the Officer SDW Coat are extremely similar, but the male coat has five front buttons as opposed to six on the female coat and also comes with two breast pockets (female coat has none). This uniform is also worn by male and female Chief Petty Officers, with the only change being the wear of collar rank insignia instead of hard shoulder boards.
