DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY GUARD PATCH (SSI)

Except for the word “Guard,” the Department of the Army Guard Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) is identical to the one for Department of the Army Police. The black, shield-shaped devices has a exterior gold border and contains a gold-trimmed blue disc containing a seal with an identifying inscription above it (“Guard” or “Police”).

The circular seal consists of a blue outer section containing the inscriptions “Department of the Army” and “United States of America.” A inset disc in celeste blue is charged with a gold spread eagle with fifteen lighting flashes emanating from its talon that represent the fifteen Army Major Commands in place when the insignia was approved and signify a speedy response. Gold is for excellence and high achievement, while celeste blue stands for the Army.

This insignia was approved for wear on 20 August 2001.
