Also called a unit patch or a shoulder patch, the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia that was worn by Soldiers assigned to Engineer Field Support Activities was approved on 31 October 1977.
Scarlet and white, official branch colors of the Army Corps of Engineers, are used exclusively for the insignia, with employ an extremely eye-catching counterchanged (alternating) pattern to depict a flaming torching superimposed on turreted tower. The tower is an allusion to Corps of Engineer laboratories and other field operating activities; the flaming torch is a traditional symbol of knowledge and enlightenment that here denotes the Research and Development (R&D) mission of the organizations.
The approval for wear of the Engineer Field Support Activities Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was rescinded on 11 July 1979.
