Worn by Hawaii Army National Guard (ARNG) Soldiers assigned to Joint Force Headquarters (HQ), Hawaii National Guard, this Shoulder Sleeve Insignia was originally approved for HQ and HQ Detachment, Hawaii National Guard on 14 Marc 1949. It was subsequently redesignated for HQ, State Area Command, Hawaii National Guard on 30 December 1983 at the same time that its description was also amended; on 29 September 1997, that amended was amended yet again. The insignia was given its current designation—Hawaii ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ, Hawaii National Guard—on 1 October 2003.
The insignia features a profile of Kamehameha I, the Hawaiian king who ruled for nearly thirty years who managed to unite the Hawaiian people after decades of strife. On his head is a red mahiole, the traditional Hawaiian war helmet.
