Better known as a shoulder patch or unit patch, the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn by personnel assigned to the Headquarters Company, U.S. Army was originally approved on 23 April 1968 for Headquarters Company, U.S. Army and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Woman’s Army Corps. With the disestablishment of the Women’s Army Corps in 1978, the insignia was subsequently redesignated solely for Headquarters Company, U.S. Army on 7 February 1978.
The pentagonal shape of the insignia is a direct reference to the Pentagon Building, home of Headquarters, Department of the Army. Inside the Pentagon, the Coat of Arms taken from the obverse of the Great Seal of the United States; the blue background of the color (AGSU) patch is from the National Flag and denotes trust and loyalty. A gold border symbolizes the outstanding quality of the leadership provided by the Army Staff.
