The United States Army Installation Management Command Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was originally approved on 15 August 2002, more than four years before the Command was actually activated. Its symbolism was amended on November 2005 and updated on 1 October 2006; the Command was activated on 24 October 2006. Scarlet is the primary color used in the insignia, reflecting the Installation Management Command’s (IMCOM) role as a Support organization. A heptagon shield references the seven geographic regions that fall under the Command’s purview, with a ring in its center suggesting continuous service and the chain links attached to it denoting durability, thus visually portraying the Command’s constant worldwide support to all Soldiers and Civilian employees and their families and associated units.
A pair of crossed swords conveys the Command’s teamwork in working with Soldiers to ensure they are prepared and trained to defend and protect. Yellow (gold) represents the high honor and values held by IMCOM, while green is the color associated with the Command’s parent organization (Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management) and emphasizes the organization’s role as steward for all installations. The black background used for the unit motto “Sustain Support Defend” reflects the Command’s steadfast determination to carry out their support mission for the garrisons throughout all seven regions.
Headquartered at fort Sam Houston, IMCOM is responsible for the day-to-day management of all Army installations around the world and was created with the goals of reducing bureaucracy, applying uniform standards to all installations, and enhaning the well-being of both Soldiers and Civilians involved in military communities. In all, it employs some 120,000 employees throughout the Command’s seven regions located on four continents.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.Related Items
