The U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, commonly called a shoulder patch or unit patch, was approved for wear on 13 June 1991. It features a lozenge (diamond shape) with a red border and white interior field, the latter containing five blue discs arranged in the form of a cross with a four-pointed star centered on the discs.
The Army defines Military Logistics as “the processes, resources, and systems involved in generating, transporting, sustaining, and redeploying or reallocating materiel and personnel,” and the five discs represents the major elements that comprise Logistics: Maintenance, Supply, Transportation, Services, and Facilities.
A four-pointed star recalls the four points of a compass rose, a common symbol in heraldry denoting global reach and application. Blue is the color of constancy and faithfulness, while red stands for courage and sacrifice; combined with the white background, they are the national colors.
The Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM) was created on 2 October 1990 through the merger of the U.S. Army Logistics Center based at Fort Lee (see below) Virginia with the U.S. Army Soldier Support Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison. It was reorganized on 10 October 1994 so that doctrine, combat advancements, and introduction of new training methodologies that previously been introduced at the Quartermaster, Ordnance, and Transportation branch schools were now centralized at CASCOM Headquarters based at Fort Lee, Virginia.
As part of the 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment, the Army established a Combat Service Support Center at Fort Lee to consolidate the Ordnance, Quartermaster, and Transportation Centers and Schools. Consequently, the various branch schools relocated from Fort Eustis, Virginia (Transportation), Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland (Ordnance), and Redstone Arsenal (Missile and Munitions). In 2023, Fort Lee was renamed as Fort Gregg-Adams.
All branches related to Combined Arms Support now fall under the Logistics umbrella, making it natural that the Army Logistics University—successor to the Army Logistics Management College—is also housed at Fort Gregg-Adams. The motto of the CASCOM is less an aspiration and more a statement of fact: “Support Starts Here.”
