Marine Corps Officers wear metal grade insignia on every uniform except for the Evening Dress jacket. The insignia for the Evening Dress jacket may be embroidered either with synthetic or all-gold bullion, and regulations do not require that all uniform components use the same type of bullion.
Both male and female Evening Dress jackets have shoulder straps (sometimes referred to as epaulets) upon which the insignia of grade is worn. The insignia may be sewn directly onto the shoulder straps or onto dark blue cloth that matches the Evening Dress jacket fabric, which is then positioned and sewn onto the shoulder straps.
At The Salute Uniforms, we offer USMC Officer insignia embroidered onto a swatch of fabric because it provides a cleaner appearance around the insignia proper once it's attached.
Placement of rank insignia on the Evening Dress jacket epaulets varies by rank. Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenants should position it so that the insignia is centered horizontally (long axis of insignia points fore and aft) between the front and rear edges of the shoulder strap. The outer edge of the bar (closest to shoulder seam) should be 3/4” from the armhole seam.
