Irregardless of rank, all Officers’ dress cap devices in the Marine Corps feature a modified branch-of-service insignia that is based upon the Marine Corps emblem, but without the motto ribbon normally clutched in the eagle’s beak. It comprises three distinct components: a view of the globe centered on the Western Hemisphere, a fouled anchor, and a spead eagle perched on the globe facing to the wearer’s right.
The same basic design is used for the cap devices worn by enlisted Marine, but the Officers’ version uses a combination of gold and silver to render the different components while the enlisted version is cast all in gold. Additionally, the Officers’ cap insignia has the rope attached to the anchor at two discrete points, while the enlisted version has the rope continuously intertwined with the anchor.
Officers wear a subdued (black) version of this insignia on the front of the Service cap. A smaller (11/16”) version serves as Dress collar insignia, and an even slighter version (9/16”) is made in a subdued version of the Service collar insignia.
