The Marine Corps authorizes two styles of Gunnery Sergeant pin-on metal insignia, a gold-plated metal version and another made of black metal or plastic. Our gold version features 22K gold plating, and our black model is made of stamped metal.
Black pin-on metal insignia are worn on several types of uniforms, but only the 22K gold-plated device is authorized for wear on a dress uniform: it is worn on the epaulettes (“shoulder straps”) of the Blue Dress Sweater, which may be worn as part of the Blue Dress “C” uniform at the option of the individual.
When worn on epaulettes, both gold and black pin-on insignia are worn with chevrons pointing inboard and the base of the insignia 3/4-inch from the shoulder seam, centered between the epaulette’s front and rear edges. Besides the Blue Dress Sweater, examples of uniform items with epaulettes include the Tanker Jacket and the Green Service Sweater.
On non-dress uniform coats, black pin-on metal Gunnery Sergeant insignia are worn vertically with a single point up and positioned so that the vertical center of the insignia is on a line that bisects the angle of the collar’s point. Insignia is placed at a point on the line where its left and right edges are both a half-inch from the edge of the collar.
A single black pin-on Gunnery Sergeant insignia is worn centered on the pad provided on the zipper flap of the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System.
