In the Marine Corps, Private First Class (PFC) pin-on rank insignia are manufactured in gold-plated metal with a matte finish or in black metal or plastic (our black insignia is made of metal).
The single-chevron of the gold PFC rank insignia is worn only on the epaulets of the Blue Dress Sweater, where it is oriented with the single point inboard (toward the neck) and positioned so that its outermost (bottom) edge is three-quarters of an inch from the armhole seam. The same guidance applies to black PFC pin-on insignia worn on garments with epaulettes, a term which the USMC uniform regulations uses interchangeable with “shoulder straps.” These include the Tanker Jacket and Green Service Sweater.
On the All-Weather Coat, Maternity Work Uniform Coat, Utility Coat, and miscellaneous organizational clothing items such as coveralls, aviation clothing, etc, the black PFC insignia is worn vertically on both collars with chevrons pointing up and with the center of the insignia on a line that bisects the angle of the collar points. The insignia is properly placed when its lower outside edges are each spaced a half-inch from the side of the collar.
For the parka that is part of the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System, a single black PFC rank insignia is centered on the space provided on the zipper flap.
