Our United States Marine Corps tie clasp or tack for enlisted personnel features the Marine Corps emblem rendered completely in golden-colored metal, the only non-standard design allowed for tie clasps/tacks worn on USMC uniforms. The solid-gold color of the emblem is intended to contrast with clasps and tacks worn by Officers, which feature the Emblem’s Eagle, Globe, and Anchor in both gold and silver.
While all branches of the Armed Forces of the United States authorize the wear of tie clasps or tacks with neckties, only the United States Marine Corps makes it mandatory for certain uniforms. Specifically, a necktie clasp must be worn whenever the khaki shirt is worn as the outer garment, which includes the Blue Dress “C” and the Service “B” uniforms (unless a sweater is worn over the khaki shirt of those uniforms, in which case neckties are not required). Clasps and tacks are positioned horizontally and placed on the tie so that it is halfway between the third and fourth buttons from the top of the shirt.
The only Marine Corps uniform for which the wear of a tie clasp or tack is optional is the Service “A.”
