In the Marine Corps, the pin-on metal insignia worn by Officers on the coats and jackets of every uniform except for the Evening Dress is referred to as shoulder grade insignia (embroidered insignia is worn on Evening Dress jackets.) Warrant Officer (W-1) shoulder grade insignia consists of a single gold bar, 1-1/8” in length and 3/8” in width, with two scarlet enamel blocks superimposed on it. The blocks are 3/8” wide and are spaced 1/4” apart, leaving a 1/16” gold border around the entire bar.
Warrant Officers wear shoulder grade insignia on the shoulder straps, also referred to as epaulets, of Dress coats, Service coats, the All-Weather Coat, and the Tanker Jacket. The insignia is oriented so the long axis points front and rear and is at a right angle to the center of the shoulder strap. It is placed so that the outermost edge of the bar (i.e., the edge closest to the shoulder) is 3/4” from the armhole seam.
