For formal official and social events that call for the military equivalent of the civilian “white tie” and “black tie” dress standards, Chief Warrant Officers 4 (CWO-4) wear embroidered insignia of grade on the shoulder straps of the men’s and women’s Evening Dress jacket. (Officers and CWOs wears Pin-on metal insignia of grade on all other uniforms.)
Regulations authorize two methods of attaching embroidered insignia: sewn directly onto the shoulder straps (sometimes called epaulets) or embroidered onto dark blue cloth which is then sewn onto the straps. At The Salute Uniforms, we’ve selected the insignia-on-cloth style because it allows the insignia to be attached with no chance of marring the embroidery work during the stitching process.
When attaching the cloth with insignia to the straps, orient the cloth so the long axis of the bar are facing to the wearer’s front and rear; the long ends should be equidistant from the front and back of the shoulder strap edges. Placement is determined by measuring from the armhole seam—there should be 3/4-inch from it to the insignia’s outermost edge.
