Aerographer’s Mates are part of the U.S. Navy’s Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) Community, which is sub-divided into different areas of warfare. These comprise Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW); Aviation (AVN); Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR); Maritime (MAR)); Mine Warfare (MIW); Naval Special Warfare (NSW); and Strike Group Oceanography Team (SGOT).
Naturally, the type of duty—i.e., sea-based as opposed to shore-based—depends on the warfare area. Naval Special Warfare, for example, is sea-duty intensive, while Aviation and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance are mainly land-based. Some areas, such as Anti-Submarine and Mine Warfare, include sea duty via “fly-away” teams. Typically, AGs will spend time working in several of these warfare areas during the course of their careers.
