U.S. NAVY AVIATION ELECTRICIAN'S MATE (AE) BALL CAP DEVICE

Aviation Electrician's Mates (AE) who are working as Organizational Level (OL) Technicians will be primarily assigned billets with aircraft squadrons (fixed or rotary wing). Among the fixed-wing assets that OL Technicians will service are the EA-6B Prowler (electronic warfare), E-2C Hawkeye (airborne early warning), E-6 Mercury (airborne command post and communications relay), C-2 Greyhound (carrier onboard delivery), and the P-3 Orion (anti-submarine and surveillance). Rotary-wing aircraft that an Organization Level AE will maintain include (but are not limited to) the SH-60 Seahawk (multipurpose) and MH-53E Sea Dragon (airborne mine countermeasures, vertical onboard delivery).

Like their Intermediate Level counterparts, OL Technicians follow the Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) guidelines, but with a special focus on aircraft components such as instrumentation, power plants, electrical systems, navigation systems, data recorders, environmental control systems, aircraft batteries, and more.

An AE who has reached a paygrade of E7 (Chief Petty Officer) is responsible for certifying aircraft as safe for flight and managing flight-deck, flight-line, Maintenance Control, and Production Control operations. Senior Chief Aviation Technician’s Mates must spend three years at that paygrade (E8) before becoming eligible for the rating of Master Chief Avionics Technician, a goal that’s usually achieved after twenty years of service.
