U.S. NAVY CONSTRUCTION MECHANIC (CM) BALL CAP DEVICE

Because of the need to establish forward operating bases and installations quickly in response to emerging threats in the Global War on Terror, there is an extremely high demand for men and women to serve in the seven ratings that comprise the Seabee community. The nature of counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations has led to a significantly greater need for Explosive Ordnance Disposal Units and Special Warfare teams, and Construction Mechanics provide essential support functions for both.

Construction Mechanics perform a variety of combat-related duties from the moment the decision is made to deploy troops to a new area. They conduct embarkation and debarkation operations whether by air or by sea, and once a base or camp is established, they are responsible for camp security, from conducting squad- and platoon-sized patrols and performing guard duty to the construction of observation posts and obstacles to prevent entry by unauthorized vehicles or personnel.

The threat of WMDs is ever-present in many operating areas, and Sailors in the CM rating are tasked with CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive) response efforts; these include prophylactic steps designed to minimize the danger from such attacks, as well as decontamination procedures to reduce their impact. Construction Mechanics coordinate recovery teams in the event of manmade or natural disasters, and also repair damage to airfields.
