The Chief Petty Officer (E-7) insignia of grade—the iconic gold fouled anchor and silver “USN” initials—is worn on several pieces of headgear and comes in different sizes and colors.
For the Combination Cap, the large (1.75”) device is worn in the front, attached to the black mounting band that is secured by the gold Navy eagle buttons that also hold the chin strap in place. (Navy regulations helpfully add that the insignia is to be mounted so “the stock's unfouled arm [is] to the wearer's right,” but this is thankfully the only way it can be mounted and still have the front of the insignia facing outward.)
The small (1.25”) CPO insignia is worn on the wearer’s left side of the Garrison Cap. It is placed 2" from the cap’s front crease and 1.5" from the bottom of the cap.
Navy regulations call for the wear of rank insignia on the Navy Working Uniform’s Eight Point Cap by all personnel E-4 and above, but they do not specify the size, nor do they indicate if subdued (black insignia) should be worn with the Type II or Type III (Desert and Woodland respectively). [Note: Rank insignia is not worn on the Eight Point Cap if it has the embroidered Anchor, Constitution, and Eagle above the visor).
The black or subdued insignia is worn on the Eight Point Cap worn by Navy Personnel serving in Marine Corps units (Hospital Corpsman, Religious Program Specialists).
