The insignia for the Navy’s enlisted rank of E-8, Senior Chief Petty Officer, features a start mounted atop the iconic fouled anchor worn by CPOs for over a century, indicating the SCPOs status of one grade above Chief Petty Officer.
Male and female Senior Chief Petty Officers wear their insignia of grade on the collars of the Dinner Dress White, Full Dress White, and Service Dress White uniforms, in contrast to the sleeve insignia they wear on the blue versions of these uniforms.
The male versions of these uniforms have “chokers,” or standing collars, as do the female version of the Full Dress White and one of the two authorized female Service Dress White coats. On standing collars, the insignia is oriented in an upright position so that the anchor’s shank is parallel to the vertical edge of the collar. The center of the insignia should be on the collar’s midline, one inch from the collar’s vertical edge.
For the female SCPO white uniforms with lapels, the insignia is centered between the outer edge and seam and oriented so that the collar’s midline vertically bisects the insignia (i.e., the shank is parallel to the collar’s edges). It should be placed so that the center of the insignia is one inch from the bottom of the collar.
