All Officers are required to wear embroidered or cloth sew-on insignia of grade on the shoulders of the U.S. Navy Flight Suit. Our embroidered Commander rank insignia is worn centered on the shoulders of the Flight Suit with the outer edge of the insignia about 5/8ths of an inch from the shoulder seams, with the stem of the silver oak leaf facing away from the collar.
Flight Suits are classified as organizational clothing and are worn only by personnel when engaged in flight or flight-related duties on a given day; ground support and non-aircrew support or maintenance personnel are not authorized to wear them. Other types of organizational clothing include but are not limited to foul-weather jackets, coveralls, green or brown flight jackets, and Command ball caps.
Regulations provide reasonable leeway in the wearing of Flight Suits, with authorized personnel permitted to wear them during commutes and even to official business meetings away from home stations if wear is appropriate for transportation (i.e., aboard aircraft) or for the type of meeting (working meetings). However, consumption of alcohol while wearing a Flight Suit off-base is strictly prohibited.
