For Chief Petty Officers (E-7), cuff links are a basic uniform component of both the male and female CPO Formal Dinner Dress Blue and White uniforms and are an optional item with the Dinner Dress Blue (male and female) and male Service Dress uniforms. United States Navy Uniform Regulations (NAVPERS 15665I) allow either stud or link-style cuff in a conservative design, with Officers and CPOs wearing gold cuff links and enlisted Sailors at E-6 and below wearing silver or black. (Note: Mother-of-Pearl cuff links are required when attending a Formal Dress or “white tie” ceremony or event.
Our gold cuff links for CPOs feature the legendary fouled anchor CPO insignia, with the tangled line symbolic of the problems, challenges, and hurdles that Chiefs must overcome on a regular basis. The letters “USN” officially refer to United States Navy (of course), but according to The Goat Locker Web site (one of the best resources for all things CPO on the Internet, by the way) the abbreviation has another, almost transcendent meaning. For Navy Chiefs, the letters also translate to Unity, Service, and Navigation, and the chain binding the three together is the “chain of life that we forge day by day, link by link and may it be forged with Honor, Morality and Virtue.”
