United States Navy uniform regulations require officers to wear either cloth or embroidered sew-on insignia of grade on Flight Suits. The insignia is to be centered on top of each shoulder and positioned about 5/8-inch from the shoulder seam. Ensign insignia is oriented so that the long axis forms a fore and aft line.
Flight Suits are authorized for wear by aircrew member and others taking part in flight or flight-related duties that working day; authorization does not extended to non-aircrew maintenance, non-aircrew support, or ground support personnel. While Flight Suits are not a liberty uniform, they are authorized for wear while commuting to and from work, including normal and appropriate stops including at child-care facilities, gas stations, banks, dining, and so forth during and after the end of the workday.
Note that Area or Regional Commanders are authorized to enact more stringent uniform policies regarding the wear of Flight Suits within their command’s geographical limits.
