Better known as a unit patch, the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) worn by New Hampshire Army National Guard (ARNG) assigned to the state’s Joint Force Headquarters (HQ), New Hampshire National Guard was originally approved for HQ and HQ Detachment, New Hampshire National Guard on 7 March 1956. It was then redesignated on 30 December 1983 for HQ, State Area Command, New Hampshire ARNG until 1 October 2003, when it was given its current designation—New Hampshire ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ.
The colors blue and yellow are the primary colors of the New Hampshire state flag. Encircling a a bundle of five arrows is nine golden stars, one larger than the other eight; the eight stars denote colonies that became states before New Hampshire. Five arrows, on the other hand, represent five counties of New Hampshire that were bound together into a common state government.
