NORTH DAKOTA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or DUI) of the Joint Force Headquarters of the Army Element of the North Dakota National Guard takes its colors of gold and green, as well as the Indian arrowhead that forms the shield and the charges found on it, from the Coat of Arms of the State of North Dakota. Created in 1957 by legislation passed in the North Dakota Legislative Assembly, the Coat of Arms is authorized to be used by the Governor of North Dakota; the North Dakota National Guard; departments and agencies of the state of North Dakota; veterans’ organizations residing in the state; North Dakota educational institutions; and recognized North Dakota patriotic organizations.

Yellow gold and green symbolize the agricultural industry of North Dakota, which is further referenced in the state motto of “Strength From The Soil.” The three stars reflect the three branches of government: Legislative, executive, and judicial. Each star is assigned the heraldic value of thirteen, signifying our nation’s original thirteen colonies; when combined, the stars add up to thirty-nine, an allusion to the fact that North Dakota was the 39th state to be admitted to the union. You can find more information about the symbolism of the North Dakota Coat of Arms by reading North Dakota Century Code Title 54, State Government § 54-41-02,
“Significant elements of coat of arms.”
