The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn by Pennsylvania Army National Guard (ARNG) personnel assigned to the state’s National Guard Joint Force Headquarters (HQ) takes the shape of the keystone, the centrally placed stone in an arch that is essential in holding all the other stones in place. Inside the gold-bordered keystone is the coat of arms of the Pennsylvania rendered in gold and set against a red background.
Also referred to as a unit patch, this insignia has been authorized for the Pennsylvania ARNG Element, Joint Force HQ, Pennsylvania National Guard since 1 October 2003. It was originally designed and approved for HQ and HQ Detachment, Pennsylvania National Guard on 6 May 1946, a designation it retained for nearly forty years. On 30 December 1983, it was redesignated for HQ, State Area Command, Pennsylvania ARNG with no changes in its description, but for the 2003 redesignation it had to be amended to update the description and add a symbolism.
