Established by the Secretary of the Army on 24 June 1986, the United States Army Physical Fitness Excellence Badge has been awarded since 1 February 1999 to Soldiers who earn a minimum score of 270 on the Army Physical Fitness Test. Recipients must earn a minimum of 90 points in each of the Test’s three components, as well as meet a body-fat standard. Soldiers must meet those criteria with each recorded test in order to continue to wear the Badge. Permanent Orders are not required for award of the Badge.
The Badge is authorized for wear on the Army Physical Fitness Uniform—in fact, it’s the only insignia authorized for wear on the APFU. It can be worn on either the t-shirt or the APFU running jacket; on the shirt, it is sewn onto the wearer’s upper left front side above the word “Army” and on the jacket it is sewn centered a half-inch above the Army logo.
It is not clear if Badge will be redesignated should the Army decide to implement its new Army Combat Fitness Test which was introduced on a provisional basis in 2019.
