U.S. NAVY CWO HOSPITAL CORPSMAN HARD SHOULDER BOARDS

When we think of the Hospital Corpsman (HM) rating, our mind’s eye automatically—and understandably—envisions the treatment of the wounded in a combat situation, either ashore or afloat. But the hard truth is that in many conflicts, a greater threat to the health of Sailors comes from disease than from bombs and bullets. This is especially in today’s Global War on Terrorism, where Navy personnel are stationed in regions that increase the risk of exposure to pathogens and bacteria with which their immune systems are unfamiliar.

At a paygrade of E3, Sailors in the Hospital Corpsman (HM) rating become Hospitalmen, and one of their main task categories is Preventive Occupational Maintenance. At this stage in their careers, Corpsmen are given many duties to assist in the maintenance of sterile environment, such as disinfecting treatment rooms (both medical and dental), cleaning sterilizers and sanitizing equipment, checking refrigeration temperatures, and the sorting and disposing of biohazardous waste (including syringes and other equipment).

Upon reaching a paygrade of E4, HMs can pursue the job of Preventive Medical Technician. In this role, they assist Medical Department officers carrying out both Preventive Medicine and Occupational Health Programs. New tasks including conducting bacteriological analysis of food and water supplies, carrying out epidemiological investigations and ensuring correct reporting of new cases, inspection food service areas and other facilities for possible sources of contamination, and administering mass immunization programs.
